YOUR REVENUE TARGET WON'T HIT ITSELF
YOUR REVENUE TARGET WON'T HIT ITSELF
5 Numbers Every Business Owner Should Know
Every business owner has a revenue target.
£500K. £1M. £2M. Or perhaps your next big milestone.
But here's the problem.
A revenue target tells you where you want to go. A Revenue Engine tells you how you're going to get there.
Too many business owners set ambitious targets without understanding the numbers, activities and systems required to achieve them.
They work harder, chase more opportunities and hope the sales will follow.
But hope isn't a strategy.
If you want predictable, sustainable growth, you need to stop guessing and start reverse-engineering your revenue.
Here are five numbers every business owner should know.
1. Your Revenue Target — What's the Actual Number?
It sounds obvious, but you'd be surprised how many business owners don't have a clear, measurable revenue target.
Saying "I want to grow my business" isn't enough.
You need a specific number and a deadline.
For example, if your annual revenue target is £1,200,000, that breaks down to:
£100,000 per month
Approximately £23,077 per week
Approximately £4,615 per working day (based on 260 working days)
Suddenly, that big annual target becomes something you can measure and manage.
The lesson: Break your revenue target into monthly and weekly milestones so you know exactly what you're working towards.
2. Your Average Deal Value — What Is Each Customer Worth?
Not all sales are created equal.
Understanding your average deal value helps you determine how many customers you need to reach your revenue target.
Let's say your average deal value is £10,000.
To generate £1.2 million annually, you'd need:
£1,200,000 ÷ £10,000 = 120 deals per year.
That's just 10 deals per month.
Now imagine increasing your average deal value to £15,000.
You'd only need 80 deals annually to reach the same target.
That's 40 fewer deals to close.
The lesson: Growth isn't always about finding more customers. Sometimes it's about increasing the value of each deal through better offers, pricing, packaging and upselling.
3. Your Conversion Rate — How Many Conversations Become Customers?
Generating leads is important.
But leads don't pay the bills. Customers do.
Your conversion rate tells you how effectively you're turning qualified sales opportunities into paying customers.
For example:
If you have 50 qualified sales conversations and close 10 deals, your conversion rate is 20%.
To close 10 deals per month at that rate, you need 50 qualified conversations.
Improve your conversion rate to 25%, and you'd only need 40 conversations to achieve the same result.
That's the power of improving your sales process.
The lesson: Track how many conversations turn into deals. Better sales skills, stronger follow-ups and clearer offers can make a significant difference to your results.
4. Your Lead-to-Conversation Rate — How Many Leads Turn Into Real Opportunities?
Here's where many businesses lose momentum.
They focus on generating more leads without understanding how many of those leads actually become meaningful sales conversations.
Let's say you need 50 qualified conversations each month.
If 25% of your leads turn into qualified conversations, you'll need:
50 ÷ 25% = 200 leads per month.
That's approximately 46 leads per week.
Now you've got a measurable lead-generation target instead of simply hoping enquiries come in.
But remember, lead quality matters just as much as quantity.
Generating hundreds of unsuitable leads won't necessarily grow your business.
The lesson: Understand how many leads you need and where your best opportunities come from. Focus on attracting the right people, not just more people.
5. Your Weekly Revenue-Generating Activity — What Must You Actually Do?
This is where revenue engineering becomes execution.
Once you know your revenue target, average deal value, conversion rate and lead requirements, you can work backwards to identify the activity needed to achieve your goals.
Using our example:
Metric | Target |
|---|---|
Annual Revenue | £1,200,000 |
Average Deal Value | £10,000 |
Deals Required | 120 per year |
Sales Conversion Rate | 20% |
Qualified Conversations | 600 per year |
Lead-to-Conversation Rate | 25% |
Leads Required | 2,400 per year |
Based on 52 weeks, that's approximately:
47 leads per week
12 qualified sales conversations per week
2–3 deals closed per week on average
These are planning averages, not guarantees. Actual targets should account for seasonality, sales cycles, capacity and the quality of your opportunities.
Now you have something powerful.
You know what needs to happen every week to give your business a realistic chance of reaching its revenue target.
And more importantly, you can measure whether you're on track.
The lesson: Consistent revenue comes from consistent, focused activity. Track the actions that create opportunities, not just how busy your calendar looks.
Stop Setting Targets. Start Building Your Revenue Engine™.
Here's the reality.
You don't have a revenue target until you know the numbers required to achieve it.
A revenue target without a plan is just a wish.
When you understand your numbers, you can build a repeatable sales and marketing system that connects:
ATTENTION → LEADS → CONVERSATIONS → CONVERSIONS → REVENUE
Every stage matters.
If you're not generating enough leads, you need to improve your marketing.
If you're getting leads but not enough conversations, you need to improve your qualification and engagement process.
If you're having conversations but not closing deals, you need to strengthen your sales process.
And if you're closing deals but still missing your target, you may need to review your pricing, average deal value or sales capacity.
The goal isn't simply to work harder.
It's to identify the constraint, improve the system and execute consistently.
